Today the FSH Society announced the second annual Hustle for Muscle Golf Tournament taking place on Friday, October 4 in Abilene, TX. The tournament and silent and live auction will be held at the Abilene Country Club with proceeds to benefit FSH Muscular Dystrophy research through the FSH Society.
FSHD, one of the most prevalent types of muscular dystrophy, is a degenerative muscle disease that causes progressive weakness, usually starting with the face, shoulder and arms, but which can attack almost any skeletal muscle. FSHD affects approximately 500,000 people worldwide and between one and two percent of the population carries a genetic trait that places future generations at risk of the disease. Currently, there is no treatment or cure.
The event, organized by an Abilene family affected by FSHD, will feature a day-long golf tournament with morning and afternoon tee times, followed by an evening awards banquet, reception and silent and live auctions. Area golfers must sign up by September 25 to participate. Members of the community are welcome to attend the evening festivities for a donation to the FSH Society.
“This cause is very close to our hearts as my husband Clint Shack, who is also a loving brother and proud father, suffers from FSHD,” said event organizer Erin Shack. “We hope the community will come out to share their support for finding a cure for this disease, which affects so many others. Golfers of all ages and levels are welcome to participate – it’s a lighthearted event and everyone who wants to swing a club should come out to the green.”
The post-tournament auction will feature a very special item, a handmade wooden Texas Skiff Farley Boat crafted by the Shack family and many generous volunteers. The Texas Skiff first appeared on coastal shores during World War I and for nearly 60 years were handmade by craftsman for the local fishing trade. Guided by Darrell Lynn, a master boat builder, the Shack family crafted the gunnel rails, seats, transom, front stem, sides and bottom all in a beautiful mahogany by hand.
“We wanted to create something very special for this event,” said event organizer Wendy Shack. “Building the boat was an incredible journey for our family and everyone who participated. The new owner of the boat will surely treasure it all the more knowing that the proceeds of the sale will fund research for a very important cause.”
The FSH Society, founded in 1991 by two FSHD patients, has provided millions of dollars in seed grants to pioneering research worldwide, creating an international collaborative network of patients and researchers. The FSH Society seeks to serve as a source of information and support for all patients and families with FSHD; act as a driving force in the development of research directed towards treatments and ultimately a cure; and bring support to patients and research for FSHD through effective engagement of governmental and private sector organizations and entities.
