Nils Hakansson (he also goes by Alex) and is a professor in the College of Engineering at Wichita State University. He has FSHD and is working on projects to help improve accessibility for people with disabilities.
He is currently working with a team of professors (who also have disabilities) on a project that will help improve both accessibility and inclusivity for people with mobility challenges. The end result will be a smart phone app that helps people with any level of disability navigate through unknown indoor spaces – with confidence.
“I am especially excited to be working on this project because it will help address some of my challenges and fears about going to unknown places,” says Hakansson. “Which entrance is closest to my destination? Is there an automatic door? What is the shortest distance without steps/stairs? How do I get to a place where I can sit and rest?”
Your voice matters!
The Wichita team has created a Mobility Impact Survey to help them understand and gather feedback on mobility challenges, preferences, and areas for improvement. The survey focuses on how individuals interact with various environments and navigate spaces. The information collected will be used to inform solutions that enhance accessibility for people with mobility challenges.
The information provided in this survey will be used to inform technology development and policies that improve access of people with mobility disabilities to gainful employment, leisure events and general activities of daily living. Most importantly, the team want your input to ensure MABLE, their new app, is designed by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities.
The survey will take 10 – 20 minutes to complete, Hakansson says. There are 10 sections with a total of 40 questions. All responses are anonymous. Upon successful submission of your response, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a gift card. The responders will randomly be selected and awarded a $50 gift card.
If you have any questions or require assistance with the survey, please feel free to contact the research team by email.
