When a child has a progressive, disabling condition like FSHD, the transition to adulthood and independent life can be challenge, as much for parents as for the new adult. Sherry Aiken guides many youths (and their families) through this process. Sheri has been working at Andrada/Pantano/Vail Academy in Tucson, AZ, as a Transition Specialist under the umbrella of Vocational Rehabilitation, DES, for the last 2.5 years. Previous to this position, she was a Behavior Specialist for 6 years and prior to that a classroom teacher, middle school science, for 10 years. “Working with kids with disabilities before they launch into adulthood has been life changing for kids as well as myself,” she says. “Helping students navigate career exploration, practice applications, mock interviews, FAFSA, and all of the other ways to help high school students prepare for their next big step is an honor.”
Join us for our monthly Early-Onset Parent Roundtable on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, where parents meet to exchange ideas, offer support, and gain insight to keep our children with FSHD as healthy and mobile as possible. We will have plenty of time for parents to exchange ideas and ask/answer questions from other parents.
We’d love your thoughts and participation. Please join us and bring your ideas, questions, answers, and tips and tricks.
Once you join the group by submitting your RSVP for a meeting, you will not need to register for each month’s meeting. You will automatically receive monthly reminders and call-in/Zoom information. If you participated in one of our meetings in 2023, you are automatically a part of the group and do not need to register again. You may change your group membership at any time by emailing us at info@fshdsociety.org.
